Colonoscopy Service - Colonoscopy NYC - Batash Medical MD

A colonoscopy allows the doctor to view the inside of your lower digestive tract. This outpatient procedure can be used to find the source of abdominal pain, bleeding, unexplained weight loss, or changes in bowel activity. It is also used to help screen for colon cancer. Performed safely in our state-of-the-art center in Queens, NY, colonoscopy may reveal conditions such as ulcers, inflamed tissue, or abnormal growths that require further treatment.

Procedure and Follow-Up

We will provide you with at home instructions to follow in the days leading up to the 30 to 60 minute procedure. On the day of your colonoscopy, a sedative will be administered to help you feel more relaxed and drowsy. You will lie on your left side, and the doctor will use a long, flexible colonoscope to examine the lining of the colon. A tiny camera on the end of the colonoscope allows images to be transmitted to a monitor. If a growth or polyp is identified, it may be removed or sampled. Biopsy of tissue in question can reveal whether the area is cancerous. Following the colonoscopy you will be able to go home once the sedatives have worn off and it is deemed safe. We will discuss any observations that day, and if biopsies were taken, you will receive those results at a later date. You may experience some bloating or cramping, but a full recovery can be expected by the next day.
