Endoscopy Services
An endoscopy allows the doctor to view the inside of your upper digestive system. This outpatient procedure can be used to diagnose gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) or to find the cause of symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, and gastrointestinal bleeding. At our state-of-the-art center in Queens, NY, we safely perform endoscopy to reveal conditions such as gastrointestinal diseases that require further treatment.

Procedure and Follow-Up

Prior to your endoscopy, we will provide you with at home instructions to follow. You will need to have an empty stomach before the procedure and will not be able to eat or drink for six or more hours depending on the specific instructions you have been given. If you take medications or vitamin supplements, you may be asked to take these after the procedure. On the day of your endoscopy, a sedative and pain reliever will be administered to help you feel more relaxed and drowsy.

An endoscope will be inserted into your mouth by the gastroenterologist, through your esophagus, and into your stomach. This is a long, flexible tube with a camera on the end that allows the doctor to examine your upper digestive system and detect evidence of gastrointestinal diseases. If a capsule endoscopy is performed, you will swallow a capsule that can transmit images wirelessly and will leave your body when using the bathroom.

We will discuss any observations that day, and if biopsies were taken, you will receive those results at a later date. Following the endoscopy you will be able to go home once the sedatives have worn off and it is deemed safe. You should have someone drive you home since your reaction times may be delayed. You may experience a sore throat, bloating or cramping, but a full recovery can be expected by the next day.
